Carol FSeptember 25, 2023.Worth visiting Wonderful, such an interesting house. We were taken through by Mary who is so enthusiastic about the house and her love of it shines through. We would thoroughly recommend a visit. Parking outside in the street was easy and free and the cafe was also excellent with very friendly staffHennyG524September 24, 2023.An absolute must if you are in Boyle. We visited King House in Boyle today and had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tom, our tour guide. I have rarely met a more engaging, enthusiastic and informed young man. His knowledge of local and Irish history was astounding. He talked to us for a least an hour on the history of the house, the King family and the Connacht Rangers. Afterwards we were free to explore the house at our own leisure - although an excellent leaflet guide is provided. King House is a Georgian mansion which has been carefully and authentically restored by Roscommon County Council and the exhibits tell the story of the King-Harman family but also displays cultural collections and Irish history exhibitions. The Gaelic Ireland exhibition tells of the high kings and Irish Chieftains. The exhibition then moves to the time of the Ascendancy. The lands granted to Sir John King in 1603 had belonged to the McDermott Clan. I particularly loved the tale of Úna Bhán Mac Dermott - a tragic Irish love story. There is so much in this museum so please leave yourself plenty of time. Don’t miss the McAleese collection - pieces of art and artefacts from all over the world, including the Middle East, Asia and Europe given to Mrs Mary McAleese during her time as President of Ireland and kindly donated to this museum for the enjoyment of the people of Ireland.AngelaMM111September 5, 2023.A great visit. A lovely friendly guide gave us an overview of the history, and then leisure time to stroll through the house and see the many great displays and photographs.FuncargoAugust 11, 2023.Interesting house Interesting stop in King House, really enjoyed the house and tour, Mary was very informative and super friendly. A very enjoyable morning spent learning the history of Kings House and the Kings family. Worth a visit to see the beautiful architecture and memorabilia from over the years. Its steeped in history. Our tour guide Thomas made the experience so much more worth it. He is extremely knowledgeable and very engaging. Thomas was an absolute pleasure to listen to and to speak to.FrancisAugust 8, 2023.Wonderful history Lesson A wonderful history lesson on Irelands houses and Gentry and a way of life. Thomas our tour guide was so engaging and knowledgeable on all aspects of the tour. I would highly recommend it to anyonePAUL SAugust 6, 2023.Super house full of Irish history I was surprised at how interesting our visit to King House in Boyle was. The guide was incredibly impressive and knowledgeable but the building itself and its history told so much about Ireland and the inequalities of colonial rule. The other half or 1% certainly knew how to live. The King Harmons found this magnificent house too small and moved to another huge mansion nearby. Money was not a problem for this family while most of the Irish people were living at subsistence levels. The house became home to the Connaught Rangers and on Independence in 1922 became part of the Irish army, Roscommon County Council must be given great credit for its great sympathetic restoration of this place of history.Adventure14244280729June 12, 2023.Kings House tour An ancient house steeped in Irish history. Well worth a viewing if you are in this part of Ireland! Thomas our guide was very knowledgeable and very willing to answer our questions.Wendy CJune 8, 2023.A must visit A fascinating house with a short but interesting history of the King family. The guide, Thomas, was very knowledgeable and engaging and brought humour to the tour.Tripadvisor rating score: 4.5 of 5, based on 143 reviews
